The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Susana Yembise, said she was preparing a ministerial regulation prohibiting the use of cell phones or mobile devices by children.
“We are preparing a ministerial regulation regarding the rule. I think children, especially those who are still in elementary school, do not yet need mobile phones,” Yohana said at a seminar on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.
Yohana said one of the reasons for preventing school kids from using mobile phones is to prevent them from accessing sites with inappropriate content. It also makes them lose concentration and impairs social interaction.
Yohana said that, as assets of the nation, that the government is obliged to protect the young generation through regulations. But she did add that parents should also monitor their children’s mobile phones usage.
