Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama met with Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Tito Karnavian yesterday to discuss a number of issues, one of which was the creation of new specially designated areas for demonstrations to take place.
According to Tito, these special demonstrations areas would still be prominent but would not impede the flow of traffic, as current demonstrations in traffic heavy areas such as Bundaran HI currently do.
“Most importantly, the message and aspirations of the people can still be delivered, without the people becoming victims of traffic congestion,” Tito said in his office as quoted by Tempo.
The police chief explained that some other countries including England, Malaysia and Singapore have created similar special areas for demonstrations.
Tito said one such place that might be a suitable demonstration area is the area across from the National Monument and in front of the Parliament building.
