Government blocks 22 movie piracy websites for containing Indonesian movies

Indonesia’s not all about the pirated DVDs – some of us (who have access to high speed internet) like to stream movies online illegally as well.

But the Communication and Technology Ministry (Kemenkominfo) is doing what it can to block movie streaming websites in order to protect filmmakers’ intellectual rights, particularly for Indonesian movies.

As a result, in accordance to Kemenkominfo’s Ministerial Regulation regarding intellectual property issued in July 2015, the ministry has blocked access to 22 popular movie streaming websites that purportedly contain Indonesian movies. They are:

1. Ganool.com
2. Nontonmovie.com
3. Bioskops.com
4. Ganool.ca
5. Kilasan.to
6. Thepiratebay.se
7. Downloadfilmbaru.com
8. Ganool.co.id
9. 21filmcinema.com
10. Gudangfilm.caa.im
11. Movie76.com
12. Isohunt.to
13. Cinemaindo.net
14. Bioskop24.net
15. Ganool.in
16. Unduhfilm21.net
17. Bioskopkita.com
18. Downloadfilem.com
19. Comotin.net
20. Movie2k.ti
21. Unduhmovie.com
22. 21sinema.com

“This (movie streaming) isn’t good for development and innovation in the [Indonesian] film or music industry and everything else related to intellectual property. This is our creative economy. We are dealing with the websites, because it’s difficult to track down the people [who made the websites]. We don’t know where they are,” said Yasonna Laoly, Minister of Human Rights and Justice, as quoted by CNN Indonesia today.

It’s all well and good for the government to protect the film industry, but this is unlikely to make much of an impact since anybody who uses these sites is likely to know how to get around government blocks.
