Government to ban sale of outdated 2G mobile phones in Indonesia

Mobile phones that only support 2nd generation wireless technology (2G) are so last decade. For that reason, the government is making sure that we all have phones that support 3G and 4G technologies.

The Information and Communications Ministry (Kemenkominfo) is drafting a law that would ban the sale of 2G mobile phones in Indonesia.

“We’re preparing a Ministerial Decree that would push people to switch to smartphones. We won’t allow 2G-only mobile phones to be sold. When the decree is issued, phones that are sold by vendors must support all 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies,” said Muhammad Budi Setiawan, postal instruments and IT director general at Kemenkominfo, as quoted by Detik today.

The Ministry hopes the ban on outdated phones will push telecommunications providers towards upgrading their services in accordance with global wireless technology standards.

It wasn’t revealed when the ban would take effect.
