Google’s cheap Android One smartphone coming to Indonesia in December

Back in June, Google announced its Android One program to create cheap, high-quality smartphones targeting consumers in developing countries. The first batch of Android One phones hit India in September and it looks Indonesian will be able get their hands on one starting in December.

The rumours of the Android One’s December launch in Indonesia were confirmed by Andry Huzain, SVP Marketing & Business Development at Lazada, an online shopping service.

“It’s true (Android One will be launched in Indonesia), but it won’t be called Android One, it will use a local brand,” Andry said, as quoted by Kompas

However, Andry would provide further details regarding which local brand would market the Android One in Indonesia.

Lazada will market the Android One exclusively in Indonesia. The models will be sold using a different system than the one used for Xiaomi pre-orders. “[The Android One] will be sold using an open-sale system,” Andry said.

If there are no delays, the plan is for the Android One to launch in Indonesia in mid-December 2014.

Although no price has been confirmed for the Indonesian models, Andry said that the price of Android One would be far below the price of the products marketed by Xiaomi in Indonesia.

By comparison, the Android One launched in India was priced at approximately 105 US Dollars (or about Rp. 1.2 million).

The Android One models released so far have had baseline specifications including a 4.5-inch screen, quad-core processor, 1 GB RAM, dual SIM slots, 5-megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera, micro-SD slot up with 32 GB capacity and a removable battery.
