Google Play Movies now supports downloads in Indonesia

Indonesians have plenty of options if they want to watch the latest DVD releases – it’s just that most of them are illegal. But now those of you who actually want to follow the rules and pay filmmakers for high quality copies of their movies have a new option, courtesy of Google.

Just yesterday, Google Play Movies rolled out official support for purchases in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

You can either purchase a copy of the movie outright or download a “rental” copy which generally gives you about 48 hours of access to the movie (starting from the first time you begin playing it). You can stream the films to any of your devices, including your smartphone, tablet or laptop. Many of the films include Indonesian subtitles.

In Indonesia, movies are priced in Rupiah and generally cost about Rp 100k-200k to purchase and Rp 19k to Rp 25k to rent. The purchase prices may seem somewhat steep, especially for older movies, though we think they are still on average cheaper than what you would pay at the few legit DVD stores in Jakarta. And the rental prices aren’t bad at all, especially for recent releases like “Interstellar” and “Chappie.”

We’re not sure if this will get many people to give up on purchasing pirate DVDs here, but at least its a start.
