While internet connections in Jakarta have seen significant speed improvements over the last few years, we are still lagging behind some countries in the region such as Singapore and Australia.

But speeds in the capital and across Indonesia should see a major boost in 2019, after Google has completed its new underwater internet cable project, codenamed Indigo, which will connect Jakarta to Singapore and Sydney (via Perth).

The 9,000 km cable will use the latest integrated fiber optic technology and will be capable of transferring at least 18 terabits per second (which the search giant says is capable of 8 million simultaneous Google Hangout video calls). Project Indigo is expected to bolster the backbone of Internet infrastructure throughout Southeast Asia, reducing latency and improving signal reliability.

The project involves Google working in partnership with a number of other regional telcom partners including Indosat Ooredoo, AARNet, SingTel, SubPartners, and Telstra.

In a press release about Project Indigo, David Burns, managing director at Telstra Group, said, “With Internet data consumption growing by 70 percent in Asia last year alone, these sorts of investments in international networks are critical for meeting the needs of connected consumers and businesses.”
