The Go-Jek app seems to have life a whole lot more convenient for Jakartans by making it easier for them to find a reliable and trustworthy ojek driver at the tap of the screen (the Go-Jek app actually made it in our “24 free smartphone apps that will make your life in Jakarta easier and awesomer”)
It turns out, we’re not the only ones getting a good deal out of Go-Jek. Many of the drivers who work for the company say their incomes have skyrocketed ever since joining.
Go-Jek Managing Director Nadiem Makarim said most Go-Jek drivers were informal ojek drivers once.
“We have a [recruitment] team that seeks drivers from the field. The team is led by a Field Supervisor who was also an ojek driver,” Nadiem said, as quoted by Merdeka today.
And ojek drivers hired by Go-Jek can seem pretty grateful that they no longer have to struggle to make ends meet.
“[Before I joined], my friend said the earnings were pretty good and we don’t have to fight over passengers,” said Zulkarnain, who became a Go-Jek driver two months ago.
“Back then, when I drove an ojek it was hard to even earn Rp 50,000 in a day. Now with Go-Jek I can earn Rp 150,000 to Rp 200,000 a day.”
Zulkarnain added that he keeps 80% of the money made in a day, while the rest goes to the company.
Zulkarnain also said that Go-Jek drivers have extremely flexible working hours, which means he has more time to spend with his family now.
Go-Jek’s success has also attracted the interest of the Jakarta government, with Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama expressing a desire to have Go-Jek integrated into the city’s mass transportation system.
