One week ago, the deadly attacks that took place in Thamrin, Central Jakarta, made us all realize that terrorism is still a very real and serious threat to us. And yet, life quickly returned to normal for most Jakartans after the attacks, Most of us went about our daily routines without worry, which seemed to validate all those thousands of social media messages carrying the hashtag #KamiTidakTakut (#WeAreNotAfraid).
But what about those who were unfortunate enough to have been injured in the gunfire and explosions that rocked the area around Sarinah that day?
One of those people, 48-year-old German citizen Frank Feulner, is showing he is not afraid in a very real way by declaring his intention to stay in Indonesia, despite his horrific experience.
“I have no desire to move to another country. The threat of terrorism and bombs exists throughout world,” Feulner told reporters meeting him today at Abdi Waluyo Hospital, as quoted by Kompas.
Feulner suffered burns as a result of one of the bomb explosions at the Starbucks Coffee on Thamrin. His wounds were treated at the hospital.
Feuler told reporters that he hoped his residence permit would be extended by the government as he still wanted to work in Indonesia.
“I hope that there might be appreciation from the government and they will continue to permit me to live and work here,” he said.
Feuler added that he had been a resident of Indonesia since 1998 and that he had never felt any fear, even when he was living in the Kuningan area during the terrorist attacks on the Australian Embassy and the JW Marriott.
