Garuda Indonesia to start moving all flights to Terminal 3 Ultimate when it opens in May

Compared to the modern airports of neighboring metropolises such as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Soekarno-Hatta’s Terminals 1 and 2 feel incredibly outdated. Plus we know that they are chronically overcapacity, leading to constant delays. But some of that burden will be lifted when our airport opens its own bright and shiny new addition, Terminal 3 Ultimate, in May of this year.

You’ll definitely get a chance to check out the new terminal if you are flying the nation’s flagship carrier later this year, as Garuda Indonesia is planning to start shifting all of its operations to the new terminal when it opens.

“The first phase [of Terminal 3 Ultimate operations] would be for all of Garuda’s units [to move there]. But that will be carried out in phases, because the capacity [of the new terminal] will be limited,” said Garuda Indonesia Operations Director Novianto Herupratomo, as quoted by Sindonews yesterday.

It looks like Terminal 3 Ultimate will open right on schedule since 80% of its physical construction was completed last October. The terminal will be partially operational in May, and is set to be fully operational by the end of 2016.

It will have the capacity to support 25 million passengers per year. The current terminals 1, 2, and 3 only have the capacity to support 22 million passengers per year, which is way below the average of 60 million passengers passing through Soekarno Hatta each year.

Garuda Indonesia currently operates around 200 daily flights from Terminal 2 at Soekarno Hatta.
