Garuda Indonesia issues ban on all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones, including replacements

It looks like Samsung’s galaxy of woes isn’t ending anytime soon. After numerous reports that the company’s Galaxy Note 7 phone had a faulty battery prone to overheating and potentially bursting into flames, numerous airlines including Garuda Indonesia banned the original Galaxy Note 7 last month.

Samsung began a massive and costly recall effort and was offering all of its customers replacement devices. But then reports started coming in that some of the replacement devices were still overheating, leading to a second recall and for the United States’ Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a blanket ban on all Note 7 devices on all US flights which went into effect last Saturday.

Garuda Indonesia announced yesterday that it is following the FAA’s recommendations and banning all Note 7’s from their flights – passengers may not bring them into the cabin nor pack them inside their check-in baggage.

Garuda Indonesia’s vice president of communications Benny S. Butarbutar said in a statement that any guests found with the device will be denied boarding and emphasized, “The safety and security of the passengers and crew is a priority and is of utmost importance for Garuda Indonesia. As advised by various aviation regulatory bodies, all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices are prohibited from being brought on board all our flights on person, in carry-on baggage, checked in baggage, or as cargo with effect from 17 October 2016, 0000 hrs Jakarta Time.”
