Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia sadly did not receive any accolades at this year’s World Airline Awards by Skytrax — the world’s leading airline and airport review site — and it also relinquished a title it has held for quite some time.
Skytrax, which announced the winners of its 2019 awards at the Paris Air Show yesterday, did not list Garuda in its top 10 best airlines in the world this time around. Garuda ended up just in the periphery of the top 10, coming in at number 12, while Qatar Airways topped the list with Garuda’s regional competitor Singapore Airlines coming in second.
Last year, Garuda came in ninth while it’s best ever ranking was seventh in 2014.
This year, Garuda also did not win the Best Cabin Crew award, having been pipped to the top spot by Singapore Airlines. Garuda has dominated the category in recent years, having won the award five times on the trot up to 2018.
Garuda performed a remarkable turnaround since its troubled period in the late 1990s to mid-2000s to emerge as not just as the best airline in Indonesia, but one of the best in the world, ranking up numerous industry accolades. The airline has also done well on numerous travelers’ choice awards in recent years, being named the 10th best airline in the world by Tripadvisor users as well as being named the world’s “most loved airline” in a customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax.
Now in its 19th year, the World Airline Awards are based on customer surveys done by Skytrax, with more than 20 million entries from 100 different nationalities recorded between September 2018 and May 2019 for this year’s rankings.
