We all knew a lot of Muslims were outraged when the State Palace held an event in which a man recited the Quran to the tune of a traditional Javanese song. And, as we were expecting, the hardline Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had something to say too.
Habib Rizieq, the grand Imam of the FPI, who was responsible for many of the group’s protests demanding that Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama step down for being a non-Muslim, now wants President Joko Widodo to step down as well.
On his Facebook page, Rizieq blamed Jokowi and Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim for the blasphemous Quran recital method. He wants them to apologize, or else face the consequences.
“If they don’t [apologize], then they have to be punished according to the Blasphemy Laws, and they must be brought down from their positions for insulting the Quran,” Rizieq wrote, as picked up by Rimanews yesterday.
President Jokowi and Minister Lukman were both present at the infamous Quran recital at the State Palace on Saturday.
