FPI leader Habib Novel on trial for violent protest, hundreds of police secure court

Police bulletin on Habib Novel released after the violent FPI protest in October

Remember back in October when the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) held a particularly violent and ugly protest against Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, which led to several police officers getting injured and many FPI members getting arrested?

Well Habib Novel, one of the leaders of FPI’s Jakarta chapter, is finally facing trial at the Central Jakarta District Court for organizing and leading the violent protest. And the police are ready should another violent protest take place today.

“There are approximately 300 officers here [to secure the trial],” said Metro Police Chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro, as quoted by Okezone.

FPI members wishing to attend the court session had to undergo a security check before entering

Habib is charged with multiple crimes including incitement of violence and resisting police officers.
