Fachrurozi Ishaq
Do you remember Jakarta’s ‘Counter-Governor’ Fachrurozi Ishaq? Because we almost forgot about him. But thank goodness, the man who was just a passing fad is back to provide some much needed comic relief in Indonesian politics.
Fachrurozi, who is Jakarta’s governor according to hard-liner groups such as the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and the People of Jakarta Movement (GMJ), is leading a protest today to demand that (rightful) Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama step down from his position (haven’t we heard this one before?).
True enough, a bunch of protesters are gathering outside City Hall this morning. One protester told Vivanews that there would be people from 99 community groups who would demand that the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) impeach Governor Ahok.
“The DPRD shouldn’t just threaten. We want Ahok to be taken down,” said the protester, as quoted by Vivanews today.
Police officers are on standby outside City Hall in the event of a likely protest. But, given the FPI’s tendency to overestimate the numbers of their protesters in the past, we doubt the today’s protest will gain any steam.
But, at the very least, we now know that Counter-Governor Fachrurozi Ishaq is still around.
