Forever learning: 47-year-old man takes part in primary school National Exam

Many Indonesians never had a shot at a proper, formal education. Impressively, some aren’t embarrassed to seek it out even at a time that most would consider to be far too late.

The National Exam for primary school level students is taking place this week, and 47-year-old Mat Dullah from Kalideres, West Jakarta, is one of the oldest participants in the country.

Even if Mat doesn’t have a primary school certificate, he actually doesn’t really need one. He makes a decent living and even owns his own shop.

“He sells everyday goods but he’s still adamant he wants to take part in the exams,” said Sudirman, head of the Education Agency at the Kalideres District, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

Some adults take the National Exam in Indonesia every year in order to meet job requirements. It’s a good thing that the opportunity is still open to them, because who knows what kind of unfortunate upbringing they had when they were children.

The primary school National Exam started on May 18 and ends tomorrow.
