Foreign language tutoring institution shuts, owner disappears with millions of rupiah

Global Bahasa, an institution offering tutoring in many foreign languages, was reported to the police for allegedly robbing its customers of billions of rupiah.

One of the victims, 28-year-old Enrico Purba, said he signed up for English tutoring with Global Bahasa in January. He paid Rp 3.4 million for a year’s worth of tutoring, but was only able to start attending classes in the middle of March.

“Ever since the fourth session the classes were often empty. So I’d have to go home [because the classes were cancelled],” he said, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

By mid-April, the building that housed Global Bahasa in West Jakarta was closed. The owner of the institution, a former sales marketer named Riswanda, also disappeared.

Enrico then got together with other victims to report the case to the police yesterday. It is estimated that Global Bahasa had dozens of other registered students, meaning Riswanda ran away with millions of rupiah.

Riswanda is still being hunted down by the police.
