Footballer Rio Ferdinand’s tweet about nasi goreng in Singapore angers Indonesian netizens

Some Indonesians can be a bit sensitive about other countries trying to appropriate our cultural heritage (remember the Great Indonesia-Malaysia “Dance War” of 2012?).

Well, this weekend a tweet from former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, who was in Singapore to watch the Little Red Dot’s F1 Grand Prix, caused a culinary battle on social media:

The implication that nasi goreng was Singaporean did not sit well with many Indonesians.

And then it escalated, with cats…

However, their cries of culinary misappropriation received a nearly equal amount of pushback from Singaporeans.
