Fire destroys house belonging to Sampoerna family in elite Widya Chandra housing complex

The Widya Chandra housing complex in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, is known for being the home of some of the nation’s top government officials, ministers and wealthiest business people.

This morning, a house in Widya Chandra was destroyed after being engulfed in flames. The house belongs to a member of the Sampoerna family, which founded one of Indonesia’s largest tobacco companies, PT HM Sampoerna.

“This house belongs to Pak [Soetjahjono] Winarko, of the Sampoerna family,” said neighborhood Chief Joni Budiono, as quoted by Detik today.

Soetjahjono Winarko served as the CEO to PT Union Sampoerna, a tobacco products manufacturer and trader under the parent company PT HM Sampoerna.

Joni added that the Winarko family didn’t live in the house as it was currently being used for neighborhood administrative purposes. Soetjahjono himself is currently out of the country.

There were no reports of casualties from the fire. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
