Fearing mob wrath, robber shoots self in the head after getting caught attempting to steal motorcycle

One thing the city’s petty thugs fear far more than the police is being caught by an angry mob. After all, some robbers have met incredibly gruesome ends that way, like getting beaten to death or even being burned alive as a form of mob justice.

That was probably in the back of 21-year-old Arie Pratama Sanjaya’s mind when he shot himself in the head so that he didn’t have to face a similar fate at the hands of a mob reportedly made up of over 100 people.

Arie and an unidentified accomplice were caught trying to steal a motorcycle belonging to Agus from Jalan Jembatan Besi, West Jakarta last night.

“The victim (Agus) caught the two and screamed theft, and locals soon came to the location to help,” said West Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Commissioner Herru Julianto, AS quoted by Okezone today.

The angry mob then gave chase to the two robbers before Arie decided to take what he probably thought was the easier way out.

“Out of fear, one of the suspects (Arie) took a pistol out of his pocket and shot himself in the head, which killed him on the spot,” Herry said.

But perhaps there were other, less deadly options Arie could’ve taken at the time. His accomplice managed to outrun the mob and is now wanted by the police.
