Police previously believed that Randall Cafferty, the US chiropractor who is suspected of having committed malpractice leading to the death of one of his patients in Jakarta, was in hiding somewhere in Indonesia. However, they now say they have received information from the US Federal Bureau of Investigations that Cafferty is in fact in the United States.
“We checked with immigration and received information from the FBI, Randall landed in Los Angeles on December 22, 2015. It is possible he is currently living in San Diego. The suspect has left Indonesia,” Commissioner Krishna Murti, director general of criminal investigations for the Jakarta Police, said today as quoted by Tribunnews.
The US and Indonesia do not have an extradition treaty, meaning the US government has no obligation to hand Cafferty over to Indonesian authorities. However, Krishna said that the Jakarta Police were trying to coordinate with the FBI so that a criminal case could be brought against Cafferty in the US for his patient’s death.
Krishna added that Jakarta Police are providing the data from their investigations into Cafferty’s malpractice to the FBI so that US prosecutors can quickly put together their case.
Jakarta Police have also prepared a new notice for Interpol on Cafferty’s current whereabouts, to prevent him from being able to flee to another country from the US.
Cafferty is wanted as a suspect in the death of 33-year-old Allya Siska Nadya, who passed away last year soon after receiving chiropractic treatments from Cafferty.
