Fake honey factory shut down in East Jakarta

First the plastic rice scare, now this.

East Jakarta Police have arrested two criminals suspected of producing fake honey for decades. The arrests were made in the Kampung Pulo neighborhood of Jatinegara, East Jakarta.

“We have captured the perpetrators who have been producing fake honey. The arrest was based on reports from the public,” said East Jakarta Police Chief Umar Faroq yesterday as quoted by Vivanews

Umar said the two suspects they arrested were 58-year-old Juhari and 76-year-old Suhatma.

During the arrest, the police seized evidence in the form of 800 bottles of fake honey, with the labels “Madu Super Lebah Liar” and “Madu Putih Melivera”, ready for distribution. 

Besides the fake honey, police also seized the raw materials used to make the fake honey. These included 50 kilogram sacks of of white sugar, artificial sweeteners and baking soda.

“Based on their confession, they’ve been making fake honey since the eighties,” said Umar, adding that bottles of their fake honey typically sold for Rp 12,000 per bottle. 

Police have not yet announced what charges Juhari and Suhatma face for their fake honey scheme.
