Don’t mess with a prized white-rump shama.
Agus Suprianto was walking around Jalan Adhi Karya in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta looking for something valuable to steal.
He immediately came to a halt when he spotted his target: a prized white-rumped shama belonging to a man named Sutiyo, which was being kept in a cage in Sutiyo’s garage.
“When the suspect put his hands inside the cage [to steal the bird], the owner saw and shouted,” said Kebon Jeruk Police Department Chief Slamet, as quoted by Merdeka today.
Hearing Sutiyo’s distress, his neighbors converged and cornered Agus. They beat up the failed bird thief and stripped him down to his underwear. The police eventually arrived to arrest Agus.
So why did Agus risk so much just to steal a little bird?
“It’s predicted the bird is worth Rp 2 million,” Slamet said.
