Facing drought, Bandung mayor asks citizens not to shower too often

It’s been more than a month since there has been any rain in Bandung. With the possibility of water shortages on the horizon, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil called upon his citizens to be careful about how much water they use.

“From the technical side the  regional water utility company has submitted a new and improved plan for water resources utilization. But if rainfall is minimal, it will be difficult to increase,” Ridwan said at Bandung City Hall today as quoted by Tempo.

One thing that Ridwan suggested people could do cut down on their water usage was taking fewer showers per day, although he seemed to just be joking when he said that. He laughed as he recalled something actress Sophia Latjuba once said to him about the subject.

“Sophia Latjuba says handsome people do not need a lot of showers, that’s her theory. So for those who that are handsome and pretty, don’t shower often, it’s enough to shower twice in one day is once,” Ridwan said with a laugh.

Ridwan also said he would hold prayer sessions sometime next week to pray for rain (which he apparently was not joking about).

For school and villages in danger of losing access to clean water, he said the government is sending trucks filled with water tanks to their areas.

The chief of information at Indonesia’s Meteorology Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, Hary Tirto said El Nino was making this dry season hotter than usual, affecting cloud formation and possibly delaying the start of rainy season.
