Extended long weekend for 102 Bekasi civil servants who skipped work today

After an especially long 4-day weekend, we expected to hear news that civil servants would skip work in large numbers today given their rather unfortunate reputation for being lazy. And, unfortunately, we were right.

The Bekasi city administration announced that 102 of their civil servants skipped work today without prior excuse. They far outnumber those in the administration who (probably) aren’t at work for good reason, with 18 calling in sick and 6 others officially taking extended vacations.

Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi threatened to sanction civil servants who skipped work for no reason, particularly those in high ranking positions.

“Remove them from their position, because there are many more who have the capacity to do better than those currently holding those positions,” he said, as quoted by Liputan 6 today.

Look, we totally get that the longer the holiday is, the harder it is to force oneself back into their daily work routine mode. But when we’re talking about civil servants who are paid with our tax money, there is no excuse for this kind of laziness.
