Explosion at restaurant in Pondok Indah Mall, fire and smoke close down shopping center

An explosion, suspected of being caused by a gas leak, took place at a  restaurant located inside Pondok Indah Mall I (PIM I) in South Jakarta this afternoon.

Based on Twitter photos, it appears the fire may have started at Kari Umbi restaurant.

“It took place precisely on the second floor,” said Sutarman of the South Jakarta Fire Department, as quoted by Antara

Supaman said officials do not yet know the cause of the fire.

In order to extinguish the flames, eight fire engines were dispatched.

Supaman said officers received report from the mall’s manager regarding the fire at around 2:30 pm.

Based on their information, witnesses heard an explosion shortly before fire engulfed part of the shopping center. Workers and visitors scrambled to get out of the building.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames. The mall is closed to visitors until an investigation into the cause of the fire and cleanup efforts have been completed.

Police have not released any information about casualties or injuries caused by the explosion.
