El Nino could cause a 20% drop in Indonesia’s coffee crops

Cafe culture is big in Jakarta, we know that. But watch out coffee lovers, the days of cheap caffeination in Jakarta may soon be numbered!

According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the current El Nino weather pattern may be temporarily slowed in its decline. This delay in the El Nino will most likely have drastic effects on Indonesian coffee production, with a group of Bloomberg analysts suggesting that the drop in production could be as high as 20 percent this year.

The El Nino weather pattern has however peaked, says the Bureau of Meteorology, who have been monitoring the weather patterns affects across the equatorial regions.

According to Bloomberg “a shrinking domestic harvest may prompt Indonesia to increase imports”. This could be bad news for coffee drinkers in Jakarta who are currently enjoying a huge surge in local cafes serving up homegrown beans.
