Mahmudi, a 28-year-old man from Bengpote Village in the Bangkalan Regency of East Java, was just 8 years old when his grandfather is believed to have been killed by a man named Bungkas. Last Thursday, Bungkas was found dead with stab wounds all over his body and police believe that he was murdered by Mahmudi in retaliation for his grandfather’s murder in 1997.
“It was revenge for the death of his grandfather 20 years ago The perpetrator was arrested at his home, three hours later,” Bangkalan Police Commander Imam Pauji said at a press conference on Friday as quoted by Tribun on Friday.

Police said the killing took place at about 1:30 pm in a rice field between two villages. Bungkas, who worked as a farmer, was on his way home when he was attacked by Mahmudi.
Bungkas, who was 45 years old, was found dead with five long slash cuts covering his back, but police say it was subsequent cuts to his face and head that ultimately killed him.
After Bungkas’ body was found, police quickly fingered Mahmudi for the killing and arrested him at his home soon after. When they picked him up they also seized a bloody meter-long machete belonging to the perpetrator as well as a sickle belonging to Bungkas and a white shirt with his blood on it.
The exact circumstances of how Bungkas killed Mahmudi’s grandfather were not disclosed by police. But, according to authorities, Bungkas would often taunt Mahmudi with his grandfather’s murder.
“The victim was always taunting, ‘I killed your grandfather, come if you want revenge.’ That’s what triggered this,” said Konang Police Chief Sudaryanto as quoted by Tribun.
Nevertheless, police don’t seem to consider that a mitigating factor as they have announced that Mahmudi is being charged with premeditated murder and could face up to 20 years in prison.
