Kemayoran deputy police chief in custody after allegedly waving gun around in drunken stupor

Yesterday we wrote about one of the finest police officers in Indonesia. At the other end of the spectrum, we have this story about the deputy police chief of Kemayoran, Jamal Alkatiri.

Witnesses claim that Jamal was drunkenly snoozing away in front of a car parts store on Jl. Otto Iskandar Dinata in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, on Monday at around 9 am. He was not wearing his uniform, but he had a gun on him and was wearing one the Indonesian police’s well-known “Turn Back Crime” shirts.

According to Jakarta Police Spokesperson Awi Setiyono the store’s owner tried to wake up Jamal and the deputy chief, startled out of his slumber, pulled out his gun and started brandishing it around yelling “I’m the police, I’m the police!”

The store owner immediately reported the incident to the local police station, after which three officers came to scene and discovered that their suspect was in fact a senior police officer.

After being picked up by his fellow officers, Jamal was first taken to East Jakarta Police station and then transferred to the Central Jakarta Police station for questioning.

Awi said that Jamal’s acts were unworthy of a police officer and that he had embarrassed everybody on the force.

“He has hurt the dignity of the police. It was inappropriate and a poor example for his men,” Awi told reporters on Monday as quoted by Tribunnews.

The police spokesperson added that Jamal would be investigated and face disciplinary action, with the possibility of having to spend up to 21 days in police incarceration.
