Drug courier hid 14,900 pills of ecstasy in his underwear: Police

Even as Indonesia prepares to execute another round of criminals convicted of drug-related charges, stories of drug couriers bringing narcotics into the country continue to prove that criminals are willing to risk the death penalty and go to other extreme lengths for a huge payday.

And 30-year-old Akhmad Adam was no doubt going to get a huge amount of money for the extremely huge package that he had inside his underwear, until the police busted him that is.

Police admitted that Adam was able to make it through the security at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport (and several others) while carrying a huge amount of ecstasy and methamphetamines on his person.

“The suspect was hiding the drugs in his underwear, he wore two pairs (of underwear) and walked as usual, so he went undetected while going through airports security in Jakarta, Banjarmasin and Surabaya,” Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Dwiyono told reporters on Monday as quoted by Tribunnews

Police also said that Adam had a quiet personality and had the drugs layered in such a way as to avoid the notice of security personnel while he was going through scanners.

But Adam somehow managed to attract the attention of authorities, who later arrested him on Jalan Hayam Wuruk in Gambir on Saturday while he was still in possession of the narcotics. Police found him with 14,900 ecstasy pills as well as 771 gram of methamphetamine.

Police did not disclose how they made the arrest but said that Adam had been recruited by an international drug syndicate, which they believe is based in Malaysia and is selling their goods in Jakarta and Surabaya.

Adam said he regretted his actions but said he had no choice to become a drug courier as he was unemployed and his wife was currently pregnant with his second child. He said he would be paid Rp 20 million for delivering the drug shipment he was carrying.

Authorities said Adam will be charged under country’s 2009 Narcotics Law and could face more than 20 years in prison for his crime.
