A 32-year-old drug smuggler, Dede Sutisna, was lucky enough to avoid Indonesia’s death penalty, even though he was caught trying to move 390 kgs of marijuana last year. But he was not lucky enough to avoid having to spend the rest of his life in prison.
“We declare the defendant Dede Sutisna guilty of brokering the sale of class 1 narcotics, type marijuana, weighing more than 1 kg. The sentence is life imprisonment,” said Bandung District Court Head Judge Pintauli yesterday as quoted by Tempo.
The prosecutor in the case had demanded the death penalty for Dede and his two accomplices Zaenudin and Syarifudin, who were judged in the same trial.
Zaenudin was sentenced to 20 years in prison and a fine of Rp 2 billion, while Syarifudin sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of Rp 2 billion.
Dede was arrested Tangerang, Banten, in July 2014. Police found him with 390 kgs of marijuana. His arrest led investigators to Zainuddin and Syarifuddin, who were caught in Bogor with an additional 200 kgs of marijuana.
