Six cyclists were hospitalized following a collision with a car in the upscale neighborhood of Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) on Sunday, police said.

According to reports, just before 7am, a Mazda 2 hatchback driven by a 25-year-old man identified by his initials TJ crashed into six cyclists who were on the bicycle lane on Baruyungan Bridge. The bridge connects the main PIK neighborhood, in North Jakarta, with its extension, PIK 2 in Tangerang.

Police said TJ claimed he was exhausted and sleepy after a night shift at work when he lost control of his vehicle on the bridge.

“The driver was not drunk. He took a urine test that very morning and it came back negative [for alcohol],” Tangerang Traffic Police Accidents Unit Chief Badruzzaman said today.

“He also tested negative for drugs. He said he didn’t drink either, he was just tired and drowsy.”

The six victims, all aged 40 and above, are being treated at a private hospital in PIK. The extent of their injuries were not disclosed.

TJ may yet face criminal charges for negligent driving, which carries a maximum five-year imprisonment sentence if it causes severe injuries.

TJ’s car, which sustained heavy damage to the front bumper, has been confiscated by police.
