The story of a pet dog that was killed in Cipondoh, Tangerang, has gone viral in Indonesia over the past few days, grabbing the public’s attention due to the elements of mysticism and romantic drama behind the furry companion’s alleged murder.

According to animal welfare group Garda Satwa Indonesia, the dog, named Benjol, which was reported to be an Alaskan malamute, was killed on June 18. The alleged killer is a dog trainer named Wisnu, who also happens to be the former lover of Benjol’s owner, Loren.

The post above alleges, through correspondence between Wisnu and his friends following Benjol’s killing, that the dog trainer believed Loren to be under the influence of black magic  and that the only way to break the spell was a blood sacrifice from somebody or something Loren loved.

On June 18, Wisnu came to Loren’s house and apparently did not appreciate the presence of another man there. He then stabbed Benjol in the heart, though it’s not clear if it was carried out for said sacrifice or out of jealousy.

Benjol succumbed to the fatal injury soon after.

With assistance from Garda Satwa Indonesia, Loren reported Benjol’s alleged killing to the Jakarta Metro Police on Tuesday evening.

“Right now the case is being handled by the General Crimes Investigation Unit at the Jakarta Metro Police,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesperson Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

Article 302 Verse 2 of Indonesia’s KUHP Criminal Code states that the deliberate killing of an animal is punishable by up to nine months in prison or a fine of IDR300,000 (US$21.23). No arrests have been made so far in this case.
