Disgruntled construction workers brutally murder son of clients in Depok

Hadi Nurmansyah (33) was brutally murdered by two construction workers, Ali (56) and Nadi (34) who were apparently upset that the victim’s parents didn’t pay them for their home renovation project.

The director general of criminal investigations at the Jakarta Police, Commissioner Pranoto Heru, explained that the two suspects were arrested after police found evidence and witnesses linking the construction workers to the crime, which at first looked like a possible drowning but quickly turned into a case of murder.

“From the evidence at the crime scene, we suspected the victim had been killed. Then we backed up the Beji Depok Police and conducted an investigation that led us to catch the two suspects,” Heru told reporters at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Monday .

Heru explained that Ali initially had a deal with the parents of the victim to renovate their house in Beji. Ali was promised Rp 30 million for the job.

“Ali was told to come to [Hadi’s] home on Friday, October 31, 2014. He came with his friend, Nadi, and he entered the victim’s home at 7:30 pm,” he said.

Upon arriving at the victim’s home, Ali did not find the homeowner. There was only the victim, Hadi, who was allegedly mentally retarded. Ali entered into the house and asked the victim where his parents were, while Nadi waited outside.

“Ali asked Hadi, ‘Where’s your father?’ The victim answered that he didn’t know. Ali then asked where the money for the home renovations was. The victim said he didn’t know and just said he should go directly to [the supply store].” Heru explained.

Hearing the victim, Ali apparently became very upset. He bound the victim’s hands and feet and covered his mouth. The victims was only 144 cm tall so he could not fight while being smothered by the suspect, who was much taller than him.

“After being smothered, the victim was taken to the second floor. There, the victim was put in the bathtub with his head in the water while his legs were stretched out. He was not hung up,” Heru said.

City Police Commissioner Ananto explained that Nadi helped Ali lift the victim into the bathtub. After murdering the victim, Ali took Hadi’s cell phone.

“The suspect had also rifled through other drawers in the victim’s home, but no items were taken,” said Ananto.

The body of the victim was first discovered by the victim’s mother, who came to his house at 8 pm.

After an investigation, Nadi was arrested in Nadi Sumedang, West Java, on November 2  at 11 pm, while Ali was arrested in Cilodong, Gurgaon on November 3 at 1 pm.

“According to the autopsy report, the death was caused by a lack of oxygen, presumably due to smothering. So the victim was confirmed to be dead before he could have drowned in the bathtub,” Ananto said.

Ananto said the suspects confessed to killing Hadi because he was upset with the victim’s parents. “The suspect hoped to get the money that day, but then they came down and its wasn’t there, and the response they got from the victim was unpleasant. The suspect was in desperate need of money at the time,” he explained.

The two suspects are charged with premeditated murder and manslaughter with a possible sentence of life imprisonment or death. In terms of evidence, the police found cloth napkins that were used to smother the victim, rope that was used to bind the victim and the victim’s cell phone.
