During his campaign, President Joko Widodo repeatedly said that some of his main areas of focus in his second term would be youth, technological innovation and the digital economy. He also said that he would strongly consider calling upon some of the country’s brightest millennials to help him reach his goals.

While Jokowi has yet to name his ministers for the 2019-2024 period, much of the speculation about the president’s cabinet has centered around which millennials he may appoint.

Yesterday, independent survey group Arus Survei Indonesia released the names of 20 renowned millennials in Indonesia who could be potential prospects for ministerial posts. Among the names included were actress Dian Sastro of Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? fame, Go-Jek CEO Nadiem Makarim, Bukalapak CEO Achmad Zaky and Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Chairwoman Grace Natalie.

The charts below — the first of which contains 10 millennials who are not members of any party while the second are millennials who are party members — show scores given by respondents who were asked about their ministerial potential based on categories such as personal integrity, social influence and communication skills.

Dian Sastro’s name was among those that stood out in the survey, particularly as the actress has never been involved in politics.

“I think [Dian Sastro] could be for the Tourism Ministry because that ministry needs a millennial’s touch,” ASI Executive Director Ali Rif’an told journalists yesterday, as quoted by Merdeka.

ASI’s survey, which was carried out in three stages between February and July, is based on the opinions of 110 political and social issues experts in Indonesia.

Publicly, President Jokowi is a leader who appears to appreciate the youth culture. Earlier this month, he invited US-based Indonesian rapper Rich Brian to the Bogor Presidential Palace, proclaiming that the young hip-hop artist “makes us proud”.
