Desperate criminal tries to escape by hiding in sewer, police struggle for hours to get him out

Desperate to escape security guards and an angry mob in West Jakarta, an alleged robber tried to escape into the sewers. As you can see from the picture below, it did not go well for him.

Police say Wahyu was part of a group of five robbers who tried to rob some houses in the Puri Indah housing complex located in Kembangan, West Jakarta, early Thursday morning.

However, Wahyu and his accomplices were discovered by local security forces. They scattered but were pursued by residents of the area.

Desperate to get away, Wahyu tried to escape into a sewer, but soon found himself stuck.

Security guards reported the incident to the Kembangan Police. Once on the scene, they tried to convince Wahyu to surrender and leave the sewer. But Wahyu resisted for five hours. Police fired a warning shot and tried to use a rope to get him out, both without success.

Finally, police asked the fire department for help in getting their suspect out of the sewer. Firefighters managed to remove the concrete drain covers obscuring Wahyu’s hiding place. They then started sprayed him with a high-powered water hose, which eventually did the trick and got him to come out.

According to Tribunnews, Wahyu emerged shaking and soaking wet. He had a look of fear on his face and did not say much when questioned by reporters on the scene.

“I was scared of being arrested, of being beaten to death,” Wahyu told police in front of the hundreds of witnesses that had come to watch the spectacle.

West Jakarta Police Commissioner Imam Santoso said they are still investigating the case and would do their best to catch Wahyu’s accomplices.
