Democracy Saved? SBY Says He Will Issue a Decree to Cancel the Regional Elections Law

The words has just come down that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will issue a governmental regulation in lieu of law (Peraturan Pemerintah Pengganti Undang-undangan or Perppu).

President elect Jokowi welcomed the plan from his home in Menteng, saying, “Yes, great. We already know that people require direct elections, so that the political rights of the people are valued and heard.”

President SBY said in an an official statement that he would sign the Election Law but then immediately issued the Perppu canceling it. However the House of Representatives would have to approve the decree in its next session. The DPR has the power to vote to cancel the decree.

“I will submit the Perppu, but objectively it is still up to the House of Representatives. If the House earnestly listen to the people, they should allow for direct elections with the improvements we have proposed,” said SBY, referring to the Democratic Party’s 10-point plan to improve Direct Elections, the rejection of which supposedly caused their infamous walkout from the RUU Pilkada vote.

Given the way this has gone down so far, we seriously doubt this is the end. We’ll keep you updated on the next move in this Indonesian House of Cards-style power play.
