Defused: Police intercept illegal shipment of 2.2 million firecrackers into Jakarta

Jakartans will use fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate any and all events that can be celebrated by making something explode, including the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday.

Firecracker manufacturers in Indramayu were hoping to make a big bang by illegally shipping their goods to the capital before the holiday but police defused the situation.

The Indramayu Police thwarted the delivery of some 2.2 million firecrackers to Jakarta which were being transported using two pickups that covered their explosive cargo under a tarpaulin. The drivers have been detained and are undergoing investigation.

Indramayu police chief Wijonarko said the firecrackers were produced in their region but were on their way to Jakarta and Banten when police intercepted the trucks. He said they were being charged under Article 1 of Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951, which prohibits the unsafe or unlicensed transportation of explosive materials.
