With crime worries high, Governor Ahok says CCTVs and security personnel will keep citizens safe

A string of violent motorcycle robberies (and shocking incidents of mob justice) have Jakartans worried about crime and safety in the city. But Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said citizens shouldn’t worry – he’s got a plan.

Ahok said the government was currently working with law enforcement agencies to spread the city’s formal security forces, consisting of police officers and soldiers all throughout areas in Jakarta.

“You’ll find them in almost in every village,” Ahok said at City Hall this morninng as quoted by Vivanews

Ahok said the city was tightening security in part due to the increasing number of robberies reported throughout the city.

The governor admitted that, even with thousands of security agents posted throughout every part of the city, they could not completely eliminate crime.

But he said the city would also begin placing high definition CCTV cameras throughout the city, equipped with ERI (Electronic Registration Identification) to make sure officials had eyes on every corner of the city.

By the end of this year, Ahok said there will be, at a minimum, 2,500 CCTV cameras monitoring Jakarta.

“We want the whole of Jakarta to be monitored by CCTV. Because Jakarta is so vast. We should be able to see something on CCTV and then take action,” Ahok said.
