How far would you go to marry the person you love? One young woman in Tebet was willing to commit larceny so she could marry her beloved boyfriend, but now it looks like she will end up behind bars instead.
Twenty-year-old Lies Apriliani was arrested by the Tebet Police yesterday after having been caught stealing cash and merchandise from her employer worth Rp 18 million.
Tebet Police Chief Commissioner I Ketut Sudarma said Lies admitted to stealing the money because she wanted to marry her boyfriend, 24-year-old Abeng as soon as possible, but did not have enough money to do so.
“So the money, according to her confession, would have been used to pay for the costs of marrying her boyfriend,” Ketut told Kompas.
The case began when Febni Susilowati, Lies’ employer who also owns a mobile phone shop in the Bukit Duri neighborhood of Tebet, reported that a large amount of cash and merchandise had been stolen from her store.
Police soon suspected Lies after she stopped coming to work without telling Febni. CCTV footage from the store also showed Lies fleeing from the store.
Lies was found by police at Abeng’s home. She had apparently stashed her stolen items at his home, including Rp 8 million in cash and nine mobile phones.
Police say Lies could now face up to five years in prison for her crime.
