Police say they are complying with the apparent wish of a couple who were found dead together in a hotel room in Ciputat, South Tangerang.
RA, 26, and TPN, 23, who were romantically involved, were found dead while fully clothed and holding hands on the bed on Jan. 3.
A search of the room turned up a package containing the highly toxic potassium cyanide, which is believed to have been ingested by the couple.
Police also found what looked like a suicide note, which contained some unusual requests.
According to the Jakarta Metro Police, the couple wrote asking the police not to publicize their deaths. However, as protocol would have it, the police are obliged to report their investigations to the public.
“They also asked the police not to investigate their deaths as it was done out of their own accord,” Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Endra Zulpan said in a press conference on Friday.
In accordance with the request, as well as to comply with the request of the victims’ families, police have stopped investigation into the case.
As such, no motive for the apparent suicide was ever established.
Indonesia currently does not have a dedicated government-run suicide prevention hotline, but if you or anyone you know is suffering from depression and/or contemplating suicide, you can get more information and resources from several local NGOs dealing with mental health and suicide prevention, such as intothelightid.org.
