An Indonesian cop who was assaulted by his own boss over a trivial matter may himself face sanctions for exposing the incident to the world.

A CCTV recording has gone viral recently showing a police function in Nunukan regency, North Kalimantan. In it, a cop can be seen helping move a table when, from the bottom of the frame, another cop launches at him and lands a flying kick. The assailant then punches him in the face, knocking him down, and lands another kick for good measure before seemingly verbally berating him.

While the assault was going on, others in the hall seemed only mildly concerned for the well-being of the assaulted cop.

The incident occurred on Oct. 21. After the video went viral today, the assailant has been identified as the chief of the Nunukan precinct, who goes by the initials SA, and that the victim was his subordinate, who goes by the initials SL.

North Kalimantan Police spokesman Budi Rachmad confirmed the incident, explaining that SA was angry at SL because the subordinate was out of reach when the chief needed help with technical issues he was having while in a Zoom meeting with the National Police HQ in Jakarta.

“When the Zoom issues arose, the victim was not around. He also didn’t pick up his phone,” Budi said today.

Following the assault, SA was demoted and transferred away from the precinct on Oct. 25. But the former chief wasn’t the only one who bore the brunt of the consequences, as SL, too, may be held responsible after he was found to have spread the video, which eventually went viral nationwide.

“He will be processed for ethical violations,” Budi said.

The Indonesian police have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, and this latest incident is unlikely to repair their plummeting reputation in the country.
