Fresh from having been ranked the most connected megahub in all of Asia, Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is not letting up in terms of improving its facilities to accommodate more flights.

State-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura II announced that Soekarno-Hatta will soon have its third runway, which is planned for construction this year.

“The groundbreaking is planned for April 2017,” said PT Angkasa Pura II First Director Muhammad Awaluddin, as quoted by Tempo today.

According to Awaluddin, the third runway, which is going to measure 3000m by 60m, would enable Soekarno-Hatta to handle 114 airplane take offs and landings in an hour, up from the possible 72-86 on the two current runways.

Awaluddin did not give an estimate as to when the third runway would be operational, but he said it would enable over 100 million passengers to fly in and out of Soekarno-Hatta by 2025. Right now, Soekarno-Hatta sees around 33 million passengers traveling through it each year, exceeding its designed capacity.

With the third runway expected to carry even more passengers into Soekarno-Hatta, we hope that the passenger terminals continue to be improved as well. In that respect, there have been long standing plans to build a fourth terminal for the airport, though there hasn’t been any updates about the planned project lately.
