Commuterline to introduce distance-based fare in April

The KRL Commuterline has become the affordable mode of transport of choice for a lot of Jakartans and commuters from the capital’s outlying satellite cities. But will it become more expensive soon?

Well, that depends on the distance you have to travel. Starting April 1, PT KCJ, the company that manages the KRL Commuterline, is introducing a new fare system.

“For the first 25 km traveled, commuters will be charged Rp 2,000. And then Rp 1,000 for every subsequent 10 km traveled,” said PT KCJ First Director Muhammad Fadhil, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.

Currently, commuters pay a flat fee of Rp 2,000 for the first five stations from their station of departure, and Rp 500 for every three subsequent stations after that.

So commuters can end up paying more or less as the new fare system takes effect. How will this affect the cost of your commute?
