Fraudsters, liars and cheats can learn a thing or two from Edi Sanjaya, a janitor who returned a wallet belonging to celebrity lawyer Hotman Paris and initially refused to accept any reward.
Hotman, who says he was touched by Edi’s honesty, wrote several social media posts about losing his wallet, which contained Singapore and US dollar bills amounting to IDR70 million (US$4,614) at Mall Kelapa Gading (MKG) on Wednesday. Yesterday, he called a press conference at the location specifically to heap praise on Edi.
According to Hotman, Edi twice refused to accept any financial reward for returning the wallet. The lawyer then decided to put Edi on the spot and literally shoved an envelope containing an undisclosed amount of money into the janitor’s pocket during the press conference.
Hotman and his business partner also said that it would be unethical for them to steal a person with integrity like Edi from his current employers, but stressed that he would be welcome to work for them whenever he wishes.
“He has such a clean heart. I have never met a human being like that. This is a lesson to all of you denigrators, social climbers. The cleaning service worker is truly a god-level man,” Hotman said in the video.
Hotman noted that Edi and his wife have one small child together, with another on the way. The lawyer insists that his story with Edi was not fabricated in any way.
We sure hope people like Edi are the norm rather than the exception in this country.
