The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested two women, identified by their initials SA and AN, in West Jakarta as the pair were the intended recipients of 12 kg of methamphetamine from China.

The meth arrived in Indonesia hidden in 30 DVD player boxes. The police say SA and AN were only a small part of an illegal drug smuggling ring.

“SA and AN are victims of Nigerians named Kingsley and Johnson. They (SA and AN) were promised by the two [Nigerians] a lot of money [to smuggle drugs],” said Dedi Fauzi, deputy of the Eradication unit at BNN, as quoted by Vivanews today.

Dedi said that foreign smugglers often targeted local women by getting into romantic relationships with them or even marrying them, before getting them involved in the drug trade.

“[The foreign smugglers] would act kindly to women, but in the end they take advantage of the women and turn them into [drug] couriers,” he said.

The BNN suspect that this particular method of drug smuggling has been successful many times in the past.
