Things are coming to a head in a village in North Sumatra, where residents are reportedly living in fear of a terrifying monster killing their precious livestock.
According to reports, hundreds of pigs, chickens, and ducks have been killed in the past few days in North Tapanuli regency’s Pohan Tonga village. Residents believe that a bloodsucking palasik, which, according to local folklore, is a flying creature consisting of a head with its spine and internal organs hanging underneath.
Legend has it, however, that palasik roams at night to hunt for and eat unborn fetuses or dead babies, not livestock, so this case might represent a possible change in the creature’s dietary preferences.
“The mysterious creature sucked the blood of our livestock to their deaths,” village chief Walben Siahaan said today.
Local police seem to be taking the residents’ report seriously, which is perhaps unsurprising in a country with deep supernatural traditions.
“The police will carry out an investigation related to the deaths of hundreds of livestock by a bloodsucking creature,” North Tapanuli Police spokesman Walpon Baringbing said, adding that authorities are working with the region’s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to determine the livestock’s cause of death.
“The attacks on the livestock occurred at night. We will focus our probe on that timeframe.”
Let’s hope the authorities have the spine to investigate this case.
