Beware the Banjir! Heavy rains and possible flooding predicted for early November

A scene for last year’s floods in Jakarta

Best get your rain boots ready and be prepared to put your valuables in high, dry places – rainy season has started and the floods could be coming as early as next week.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted heavy rains will hit Jakarta in early November. Therefore, residents are asked to be vigilant against the threat of flooding.

The Head of the Research and Development Agency for BMKG, Edvin Adrian, said October already saw the transition period between the dry and rainy season. He also said heavy rains are expected to take place from early November to December. Similar storms are expected to hit Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi .

“High intensity rains are expected to take place in November and December,” Edvin said on Thursday, as quoted by Kompas.

Make sure your Halloween costumes are waterproof, because light rains are expected in parts of the Greater Jakarta Area, including East Jakarta and Bekasi. You might be safe if you’re in Central Jakarta, where it’s predicted to be cloudy all day.

The first heavy rain of the season hit Jakarta on Wednesday night, and much of the city was covered in clouds yesterday.
