Bekasi citizens fight back after Indosat rekindles old joke for ad campaign

Jokes and memes about Bekasi are so last year (click here if you’ve been out of the loop) that perhaps someone should’ve told national telecommunications provider Indosat that they were late for the party.

Yesterday, Indosat released a new ad campaign (see photo above) that promoted a new international roaming plan. In the poster, they claimed, “going on holiday to Aussie (Australia) is easier than going to Bekasi.”

The Indosat ad was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It drew fierce criticism from Bekasi citizens, who are planning to sue the company.

“Indosat shouldn’t have joked about Bekasi in order to gain profit. The people of Bekasi never did anything wrong to Indosat. We as citizens are offended by this viral [ad],” said Bekasi public figure Ali Anwar, as quoted by Harian Terbit today.

“If [they don’t apologize] then we will sue Indosat,” he said.

Bekasi citizens also took to Twitter to condemn Indosat.

Boycott @indosatmania! People of Bekasi don’t use Indosat!

Dear Indosat, don’t act all cool with the poster that insults our city (BEKASI), I’m very disappointed as an Indosat customer.

Indosat, for their part, have issued an apology on Twitter and taken down the controversial poster.

Hi, we apologize for the discomfort; we are no longer using the viral [ad]. Thanks.
