Be careful of what you share: Woman ‘bullied’ on social media after posting about restaurant charging Rp 400k in “electricity fee”

Leonita Julian has become the talk of the town over the past couple of days. She has become famous for a post in which she complained about how she and her meeting group were allegedly charged with Rp 400k in “electricity fees” for charging their laptops at a Marche restaurant in Plaza Senayan.

Leonita, through her Twitter account @leonisecret, posted this on April 4:

Soon after, media outlet Merdeka.com jumped the gun and drew their own conclusions from that one photo. The Merdeka article says that Leonita was the one who received the bill and that the restaurant informed its customers beforehand about an electricity charge if they wanted to use the private meeting room.

“I was bullied on social media because people thought I was just a complaining customer,” Leonita told Tempo yesterday.

True enough, netizens did bully Leonita on Kaskus. The bottom screenshot is particularly horrifying, with the Kaskus user using a masturbating stick figure after seeing Leonita’s photo:

The lady doesn’t have money but she wants to ‘exist’. Holding a meeting at PS (Plaza Senayan) but they only order drinks

If you don’t have money just hold the meeting at a warung. Don’t try to ‘exist’ like ‘alay’

But, according to Leonita, she was actually never at the restaurant on the day of the meeting. She just happened to share the photo, which was originally posted by her friend who attended the meeting at Marche.

Leonita’s version of what actually happened

Leonita’s only crime was that her re-Tweet gained the most traction.

“This has become defamation because many accused me of criticizing the restaurant,” Leonita said.

For the record, Marche Restaurant employee Thomas Sjamsul told Tempo that the restaurant has never charged customers for electricity.

“We never charge customers for electricity. We even provide electrical outlets free of charge,” Thomas said.

Well, we just don’t know who to believe anymore in this crazy social media scene. This just goes to show that you must be critical when reading about anything on social media (or traditional media, for that matter), as many stories out there are left unchecked and unverified.
